Indicative Content
This module will allow students to work alongside professionals in the region and to consolidate their approach to employability beyond university. The placement is for 40 hours which can be organised across both semesters, depending on the student and the placement provider. The precise nature of the work/research to be undertaken will be discussed and agreed between the placement supervisor, the student, and the person responsible for the placement supervision at the placement. The Final Report will be a reflective account of the skills acquired on the degree and the ways in which these are appropriate to the workplace experienced on the placement.. Each student will be allocated a University supervisor, who, before the placement begins will establish an agreed framework (aims and outcomes expected from the project): a contract between student, supervisor and placement supervisor. The University supervisor will keep in regular tutorial contact over the period both of the placement itself, and during the writing and development of the final report. Much responsibility will nevertheless be placed on the student to meet the ethical as well as academic standards (also included within the agreed contract) required by the placement.

The assessments encourage students to consider how to present themselves to employers, how to identify and communicate their skills, and how those skills will benefit them in the workplace.

Examples of placements: in local libraries, theatres, schools, publishing groups, local arts organisations (Appetite and B-Arts), and an English and Creative Writing internship (primarily for students with LSAs who may struggle in a work environment)
Learning Strategies
150 hours of learning time in total, of which 40 will be spent in the placement.
There will be tutorial support (6 hours) at the University (throughout the module; regular appointments will be made to discuss progress, developments, problems, during the period of the placement, and guidance and advice will be provided during the preparation of the final written report. Guidelines will be provided for the preparation of the report by the University supervisor, in a detailed module booklet.
