We will focus on the treatment of `the city and the country? in a number of representative texts, (which may include Dickens Oliver Twist, Charlotte Bronte Jane Eyre; Hardy Return of the Native, Gissing In the Year of the Jubilee), thus charting some of the main positions and narrative strategies of the Victorian novel contributing to the debate on modernity
