Module Learning Strategies
300 hours of learning time in total, of which 45 will be spent in the placement. There will be initial tutorial contact with a University supervisor during the first two weeks of the summer semester to discuss the 'project' to be developed during the placement. Further advice and consultation will be provided by email during the rest of the semester.
Module Indicative Content
This module will allow students to work alongside professionals in the region. The placement is for one half-day per week (or equivalent, by negotiation with the placement supervisor). The precise nature of the work/research to be undertaken will be discussed and agreed between the placement supervisor, the student, and the person responsible for the placement supervision at the placement. It is intended that the final report will be the product of the student's engagement with the experience and insights offered by the placement. Each student will be allocated a University supervisor, who, before the placement begins will establish an agreed framework (aims and outcomes expected from the project): a contract between student, supervisor and placement supervisor. The University supervisor will keep in regular tutorial contact over the period both of the placement itself, and during the writing and development of the final report and the interim oral report which will precede it (the oral report will be accompanied by a brief reflective commentary of 500 words). Much responsibility will nevertheless be placed on the student to meet the ethical as well as academic standards (also included within the agreed contract) required by the placement.
Examples of placements: in local libraries, theatres, schools, local publishing groups. It will be possible to work with overseas students within the University English Language Centre, or with Groundwork Stokess literacy scheme (with the Basic Skills Agency), or with Culturegen (IT and other related businesses).
