Module Details
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module builds on the learning that took place in the technical processes module at level 4, with a particular emphasis on broadening your approaches to pattern cutting. It aims to refine your skills and build confidence, enabling you to recognise the suitability of different established approaches for different purposes, and experiment to identify new ways of working.
You will study different types of pattern cutting, including traditional flat pattern cutting, Computer Aided Design (CAD), drape and creative cut.

Your critical thinking and problem solving skills will be challenged and you will be expected to push your creative intuition in innovative ways. Whilst experimenting, you will still need to work with professional accuracy to ensure fit, grading and costing is appropriately achieved.

Skills learnt in this module are directly relevant to the modules that run in parallel: Fashion Industry Ready and Fashion Business, because you will be able to recognise how the practical constraints and advantages of working in different ways are appropriate to different production processes and circumstances within the fashion industry.

This is an opportunity for you to explore a wide range of pattern cutting methods and tools, both traditional and digital, and collate a portfolio demonstrating your ability to work with well-recognised techniques and also generate alternative solutions that challenge tried and tested approaches. In support of your practical work, your will systematically record processes and outcomes in a detailed technical notebook that can be referred back to when called upon in the future.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of well-established and new innovative pattern cutting techniques and processes
Knowledge and Understanding

2. Understand the limits of your knowledge and practical ability, and how this influences your approach to pattern cutting tasks and your potential to work in innovative ways
Learning

3. Evaluate critically the possibilities available in order to select appropriate techniques to generate design and construction solutions
Problem Solving

4. Implement a systematic approach to the gathering of evidence of exploration of pattern cutting. Apply pattern cutting concepts and principles to produce work that is creative and forward thinking. Application
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Learning will be facilitated through a series of skills development workshops, by technical demonstrators and tutors, as well as being required to further refine your skills in self-directed time. Your Module Handbook will include a week-by-week summary of activities.

As such, the learning strategies may include, but are not limited to:
• Demonstrations
• Health and safety
• Practical exercises and problem solving activities
• Portfolio building
• Technical recording (hand-outs, sketches, annotations, photographs, video)
RESOURCES
Specialist Pattern Cutting equipment
University Library
Word-processing facilities
