Module Additional Assessment Details
You will present for assessment a body of work as outlined in the module information pack. This will consist of:

An illustrated review of a contemporary art exhibition.
Module Learning Strategies
The emphasis of this module is on the development of your understanding of the production, distribution and critical reception of contemporary art and on your ability to identify good models of practice. You will also hone your analytical skills so as to be able to locate your own practice within the context of contemporary art. Teaching of the module is organised around a programme of visits to current contemporary art exhibitions and a series of supporting lectures. You will be introduced to the conventions of reviewing an exhibition both through lectures and through the analysis of a wide range of reviews (as found in publications and periodicals).

Taking part in and documenting exhibition visits.
Carrying out self-initiated gallery and exhibition visits.
Attending lectures and taking relevant notes.

Using the library and slide library for individual research and following up exhibition visits.

A range of existing exhibition reviews will be supplied to students in the module pack.

Students are expected to take advantage of the extensive library facilities available within the University, keeping abreast of current developments through appropriate periodicals and being aware of the work of major practitioners within the subject.
Module Indicative Content
This module offers you the opportunity of gaining an overview of recent developments in art, through a programme of lectures and visits to contemporary exhibitions. You will develop your familiarity with contemporary work and be able to place current practice within its professional context. You will gain experience of the diversity of contemporary practices and the theoretical discourses which sustain them so as to be able to make a more informed opinion of their value and status.
