Module Indicative Content
This module will introduce you to the process of making artwork in the context of a particular site. It will help you to identify the shifts in meaning that can take place when your work is made for a site-specific location. You will visit the location/site proposed for this module; you will research the project through visual and written documentation and produce a proposal that is viable and professional in all aspects and that makes reference to either the formal qualities of the site or its historical/cultural significance. You will gain experience of the mechanics of co-ordinating the intervention of your work in a specific location, developing skills and abilities in working with other professionals and negotiating the viability of the proposed work. You will engage in researching, planning, articulating, negotiating and documenting the site for your proposal.
Module Additional Assessment Details
You will present for assessment a body of work as outlined in the module information pack. This will include the following elements:
1) A written proposal, detailing: the making process, the installation process, equipment required, costings (e.g. materials, travel, professional services - video projector rental, photo lab services, digital output. etc), diagrams, plans, measurements, drawings, photomontages and any other relevant material. (1,2)
2) A record of research and development work (1,3)
Module Learning Strategies
You will carry out research in situ (finding visual, historical and/or cultural significance) about the location.
You will gather visual information about the site and use the most appropriate media for your intended proposals.
You will develop a critical awareness of how the context of the site effects the way the proposed work is viewed (visually and conceptually).
You will research the history of other site-specific artworks in relation to your own studio practice.
