Module Details
Module Indicative Content
An overview of the history, structure and objectives of the Police Force in England and Wales and comparison with structure of other police forces. Analysis of police powers such as investigation, arrest, stop and search and emergency powers. Processes in reception, summonses, warrants and charges and statement taking. Overview of other investigative agencies including armed forces policing, customs and excise, court bailiffs and private investigators, and their interactions with the Police Force. Analysis of case files (simulated and actual). An introduction to criminal law and the justice system, which will include the Police and Criminal Evidence act (PACE), a guide to dealing with child and adult protection issues as well as witness and victim support. An overview of issues relating to race, diversity and equal rights appertaining to the victims, suspects and witnesses.
Module Learning Strategies
12 x 2h interactive lectures/seminars to convey principles and facts (completed during semester 1). 6 x 4h group workshops to analyse case studies, produce reports and carry out presentations. Non contact independent study will be directed to reading lecture notes and the literature to support knowledge and understanding, revision for the examination including the answering of specimen questions provided for formative feedback and group meetings to discuss approach and production of the group report.

These assessments will take the form of:-

Examination (2h) at the end of semester 1 and consisting of short answer questions and 2 long answer questions (outcomes 1 -3)

Group case study, report, (equivalent to 2000-3000 words), addressing outcome 4. A peer assessment element will be included to ensure equality of marking.

Formative Assessment:

Will be provided through feedback on performance on a mock examination (after week 8/9) and on analysis of performance on case studies during workshops.
