Module Indicative Content
This module is designed to enable those who have a limited chemistry background to go on to study the module entitled Chemical Principles for Forensic Science. In this module you begin by studying many of the concepts that are fundamental to a study of chemistry. You will begin with a familiarisation with the periodic table and the atoms and elements of which it is made up. From here you will investigate the structures of atoms and molecules in more detail and look at the trends that exist within the periodic table. You will also study the various types of bonding, such as ionic, covalent, metallic and intermolecular and will be introduced to Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion for deducing molecular shape. Also, you will look at chemical reactions and how to balance equations. Then you will go on to study some chemical arithmetic, such as calculations of moles, concentrations of solutions and chemical equilibria.
Module Learning Strategies
You will be taught by a series of one hour lecture sessions. You will have four, one hour lectures per week for seven weeks, four of the sessions being used for the formative class tests, in addition to this there will be four tutorials one prior to each of the formative tests. You will be given formative assignments at the end of each of the tutorial sessions and completing these assignments and revising for tests will comprise your independent study time. Teaching of this module will be completed before the start of the module Chemical Principles for Forensic Science, so those of you without a pass in A-level Chemistry or equivalent are better prepared.
Module Resources
Module handbook, well appointed teaching room containing an interactive smartboard, access to Blackboard and library.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
None
Module Additional Assessment Details
100% Written (written exam), (2 hours). This exam will be used to demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry and will be composed of short answer questions, including calculations and chemical equations addressing outcomes 1 and 2.
Submitted in Teaching Block 1.

Additional Assessment Details
Students will be required to complete 4 pieces of formative assessment, these class tests will provide the opportunity for self assessment and peer assessment as will the tutorials, online activities and tasks assigned during the lectures.
