Module Details
Module Indicative Content
An understanding of the Police and Criminal Evidence act, how it is used to ensure the proper and controlled investigation of crime and suspects, and in particular the meaning of the act regarding the rules when dealing with searches of property and suspects. The range of professions to which PACE applies and how this places limitations on their profession. Understand the main points of law within the act and how PACE is used to safeguard the rights of an individual, and to ensure any investigation is carried out in a proper and effective manner, regarding the use of potential evidence from witnesses, victims, and suspects alike. Understand the use of PACE when dealing with the rights and rules appertaining to persons in custody. Discuss the changes/additions to the Act to respond to changes in Society etc.

End of module test (2h) based on short answer questions (all learning outcomes)

Formative Assessment:
Short summative tests will be offered in tutorial sessions after weeks 4 and 8 of lectures to provide formative assessments towards the end of module test.
Module Learning Strategies
12 x 1h lectures to present the information combined with 12 x 1h tutorial session to discuss the outcomes from the lectures and related further reading. Non contact independent study will involve further reading, especially of the Police and Criminal Act 1984 to reflect on its content and changes since its inception. Independent study time will revise for the examination.
