This module is intended to provide students with the opportunity to obtain an in depth understanding of the global chemical industry and appreciate its key players, features and drivers.

It will begin by discussing the history of the chemical industry, identifying the major milestones in its development through to the current position of chemical companies globally. It will investigate the impact that the industry has on the global economy, identifying the key nations involved, and what the industry means to each of these nations. It will identify the top chemical companies and examine their history, development, product portfolio and current strategies.

Across the industry the role of research and development will be investigated, as will the many faces of marketing. Examples of successful companies and products, together with failures and controversies will be used to understand the key drivers of the industry. Furthermore, the role of chemicals in developing countries will be explored, together with the political, social and health pressures on the industry in this context.
