Module Details
MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Critically explore the problems of major incidents and the approaches for dealing with them.
2. Explore the role of the personnel engaged during investigation of major incidents and the strategic intelligence requirements.
3. Analyse the techniques and methods utilised at the forefront of investigation and intelligence led policing.

Assessment 1 – Critique of a specified case study links to Learning Outcomes 1,2 and 3.
MODULE INDICATIVE CONTENT
Intelligence Led Policing and Major Crime Investigation are linked to the National Intelligence Model (NIM) which is the foundation upon which policing is based. Students will examine the NIM including the requirement of strategic Intelligence development linked to problem oriented policing and the use of Intelligence functions in Major Crime Investigations. The use of covert and overt techniques of investigation will be examined together with the links to partnership working. Scrutiny of major crime incidents including murder and manslaughter as well as the role of the Home Office Live Major Enquiry System (HOLMES) will be conducted. Students will consider aspects of the Murder Investigation Manual which forms national guidance for Major Crime Investigation. The use of expert witnesses and specialist services together with an examination of policies and procedures and the use of the media in Critical and Major Incidents will be undertaken.

MODULE LEARNING STRATEGIES
Contact hours for lectures/tutorials minimum of 40
13 x 2 hour lectures and workshops introducing the information and developing discussion regarding the course material. 7 x 1 hour tutorials examining selected cases in detail.
2 x 30 minute small group tutorials
6 x 1 hour student led academic support sessions
160 hours of Independent study.
Non-contact time will involve extensive reading of the course material with a view to developing knowledge from case studies and trial reports to prepare for the summative assignment.
