MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Explain and apply the means by which evidence is gathered in the course of a criminal investigation.
2. Evaluate evidence gathered during an investigation into a serious crime.

MODULE ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Both assessments’ enable you to meet the 4 learning outcomes. The court file uses a range of standard police forms (currently called MG forms). The court appearance comprises of evidence in chief and cross examination and is based on the submitted court file.
MODULE INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module includes content relating to the UK Criminal Justice System; the processes and protocols involved in the compilation and submission of crime files and the subsequent testing of these through the court process.
It covers key legislation, policy and authorised professional practice in relation to the conduct of criminal investigations leading up to prosecution. This includes attending a crime scene, gathering evidence, constructing a prosecution case file and presenting findings before the courts.
Specific focus is on achieving best evidence through effective initial crime scene management, the interview of victims, witnesses and suspects and through working with other agencies within the criminal justice system.
Related content includes legal principles such as arrest, application of charging standards, treatment and detention of suspects and the disclosure of unused material.
WEB DESCRIPTOR
On this module you will attend a simulated crime scene and act as the ‘first officer attending’ using current police technology and techniques. You will gather and analyse evidence including interviewing the suspect and then complete a court file. The module culminates in your investigation being tested in a mock trial.
MODULE LEARNING STRATEGIES
Contact hours for lectures/tutorials/practical sessions is a minimum of 28 hours.
10 x 2 hour lectures
6 x 1 hour tutorials
2 x 1 hour practical sessions (crime scene attendance and suspect interview)
Non-contact time will involve reading of the course content including the briefing material and supporting statements. The time will also be used to prepare the case file and prepare for the court appearance.
