INDICATIVE CONTENT
- Outline of the key principles of Vulnerability including Child and Adult safeguarding as well as professional practice terms used in this field.
- Understand terminology used in Criminal Investigations: (CSE, CSA, Inter -Familial abuse/Neglect, DA/RASSO)
- Identify and understand statutory partners and structures developed under current legislation to practically identify and deliver in this field (Risk Assessments, Information Sharing (MARAC/MASH, ICPC, S17/47).
- Understand the requirements of the risk assessment process and statutory roles and responsibilities of necessary partnerships required to comply with legislation as well as the overarching regulatory framework to ensure accountability.
- Understand public scrutiny procedures: Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHR) Child Safeguarding Reviews (SCR/CSR) through examination and analysis of the reasons why cases fail and the potential outcomes of such events.
- Examine case studies using group discussion in relation to failure points and subsequent developments, including national and local resources that are available to assist in such enquiries.
ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
Essay - analysis of an approved/listed case study of a failed child /adult safeguarding case study. This should incorporate key concepts outlined and discussed during the module.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Sessions will include lectures, workshop activities, discussions, groupwork, drop-in support sessions which will be delivered by various lecturers over the course of the module.
Lectures will be led by the lecturer (and guest speakers where possible) and will be used to deliver key concepts and learning within the module content. During these sessions, there will be interactive elements such as knowledge checks, short discussions, students asked for their thoughts or viewpoint and opportunities to ask questions to the lecturer.
Tutorial sessions will be based around student centred learning, group discussions and case study exploration to aide students learning on the module.
Non-contact time will involve extensive reading of the course material with a view to developing knowledge from case studies and trial reports to prepare for the summative assignment.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Critically evaluate the influence of key legislation and milestone events on investigation and partnership working regarding child and adult abuse and their contribution to safeguarding measures in contemporary practice.

2. Identify challenges faced and improvements implemented by different professionals and agencies when managing risk for Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse and Serious Sexual investigations.

3. Appraise the multiagency safeguarding response in real case studies, evaluating the failures in effective, collaborative safeguarding by analysing the review strategies and subsequent developments that arise from these.

4. Critically investigate and synthesise case studies by independently sourcing, evaluating, and integrating evidence from a wide range of academic, professional, and contemporary perspectives to formulate well-reasoned, evidence-based conclusions.

Have you ever wondered why cases of failing to safeguard children and vulnerable adults occur? Do you want to work in a protective environment and learn the skills necessary to support people and protect them from harm? In this module you will develop an in depth understanding of how partners work together to try and safeguard our most vulnerable members of society. You will develop knowledge of relevant legislation and how it ensures responsibilities between statutory agencies are delivered to achieve this. You will also develop an understanding of why cases go wrong and the challenges faced by processionals. We will draw on real life problems and scenarios to apply your learning in a realistic way so that you will be equipped in future employment, to understand the multi-faceted and complex nature of these investigations.
