Module Details
Module Indicative Content
The module will examine and explore the use and effectiveness of the key advanced investigative techniques available for use by the Police and other Investigative Agencies operating in the UK utilised in the investigation of Major Crime.
Specific focus will be made in relation to techniques utilised in ten areas of investigative strategy available to the Senior Investigating Officer relating to approaches around Forensic; Pathology; Scene; Witness; Suspect; Search; Intelligence; Covert; Communication and Incident Room management strategies.
Analysis of the effectiveness of advanced investigative techniques utilised within the UK will be assessed by drawing upon and considering other models and practices on a used by agencies outside of the United Kingdom.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Assessment of the module will be by way of completion of two equally weighted 2500 word essays in relation to topics selected from a pre-determined list of questions linked to key Investigative strategies, drawing upon and assessing the effectiveness of advanced investigative techniques available for use in each area.

Essay 1 will address LO 1 - 2.

Essay 2 will be the final piece of assessment for the module and it will address LO 3 - 4.
Module Learning Strategies
12 x 1 hour interactive lectures to present and discuss each of the key areas of strategy, together with associated investigative techniques utilised.

12 x 1 hour group tutorial sessions to analyse the lecture material and discuss its implication in relation to the investigation of major crime.

Non-contact independent study will require extensive directed scoping and analysis of policing/criminological literature.
