Module Learning Strategies
12 two hour seminars, incorporating lectures, viewing and listening, workshops, student presentations and tutorials. Familiarisation with media genres through lectures, discussion, independent learning, seminar presentations of group analysis of various media artefacts with reference to their writing, group project to produce magazine, exercises in script forms, creative thinking/ideas and 'pitching' ideas to class
Module Additional Assessment Details
1. 50% A group project - a running order and script for a radio magazine programme, including : promotional material (a voice trail, a listing and the text for a web page) [Learning Outcomes 1 to 4]

2. 50% A complete short script for a radio or TV drama or drama-documentary programme (7-10 pages, approx 7 - 10 minutes duration) [Learning Outcomes 1 - 3]

Module Indicative Content
Introduction to writing for broadcasting and use of narrative
Writing styles/formal conventions in different aspects of radio and TV, eg, news, chat shows, documentaries
Basic editorial skills (proof-reading, re-writing, polishing)
The message - cultural/social/philosophical approaches
Screen writing - visual storytelling/juxtaposition of images/tool for propaganda/silent film
Writing for radio - painting sound pictures, use of language, use of effects
Familiarisation with various script formats (film, TV, Radio, documentary script, news report)
Analysis - learning to read beyond the surface of media products
