Module Learning Strategies
You will work both individually and in groups in two hour workshops incorporating lectures, viewing and listening, and tutorials. There will be practical training in editing software, with plenty of listening examples and exercises. You will discuss both written and audio work with tutors and your peers, considering the artistic and ethical results of your endeavours as well as the practical ones.

Module Indicative Content
Introduction to writing for radio:
Writing styles/formal conventions in different genres
Basic editorial skills (proof-reading, re-writing, polishing)
The message - cultural/social/philosophical approaches
Painting sound pictures, use of language, use of effects
Familiarisation with various script formats (drama, documentary, magazine, news)
Ideas (and how to get them)

Training on at least two audio editing software programmes. Sessions will also cover the craft, the purposes and the ethics of editing, including:
Editing for different kinds of programme,
Editing to retain the essence of the original,
Editing to length
Editing for clarity
Editing music
Mixing speech, music and sound effects

Portfolio of written work 50%
A group project - a running order and script for a radio magazine programme, including promotional material (a voice trail, a listing and the text for a web page)
A complete short script for a radio drama or drama-documentary programme (7-10 pages, approx 7 - 10 minutes duration)

Portfolio of audio work 50% (final)
Two short editing exercises using different editing programs
An final editing exercise in which you will compile and edit a 5' piece of radio to a broadcast standard from supplied audio material.
