Module Details
Indicative Content
This module provides you with an understanding of the production process involved in film making. You will be given an overview of the pre-production, production, and post-production elements, with reference to the importance of ideas and subject research, visual composition, and audio production. Your visual awareness and communication skills will be developed through your Personal Visual Notebook (PVN). An emphasis will be placed on group communication and a range of team building exercises will be implemented. This element aims to provide you with an understanding and overview of the full production process from concept to postproduction and the importance of collaboration and teamwork. You will develop the basic production skills required in camera, sound and editing and the interdisciplinary skills of communication, organisation, and planning, which are vital to successful film production.
Assessment Details
ASSESSMENT ONE: SHORT FILM PROJECT

A 5-minute Short Film to evidence knowledge and understanding of the underlying concepts and principles relating to film production practice. The production process will rely on a successful evaluation and the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems.

ASSESSMENT TWO: PERSONAL VISUAL NOTEBOOK

A Personal Visual Notebook to evidence reflective practice, learning development, problem solving and application during the Short Film Project.

LOs (Learning Outcomes): 5-6 40%.
Learning Strategies
The module will build your research, analysis and production skills, a complementary blend necessary for succeeding in the media industries. You will be involved in several exercises and work individually and in groups to produce a short film. There will be technical demonstrations, exercises, and workshop instructions. The learning experience will involve you extensively in researching and practicing film making, shooting sequences, and editing; sound recording and mixing. This module is taught using a combination of mixed mode delivery, including Technical Instructions, film craft sessions on creative film skills and tutorials. Guided Independent learning activities might include research, film screenings, and academic reading. Tutorials offer students opportunities for more individual support on the module including on their chosen assignment topic.
Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the seminal concepts and principles relating to film production practices.

2. Develop film production practice skills within a structured and managed environment through technical training and application.

3. Evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems in relation to film production.

4. Communicate the results of production practice accurately, reliably, and with structure and coherency.

5. Demonstrate knowledge of the main methods of enquiry in film production practices and demonstrate application of its key principles.

6. Demonstrate qualities and transferable skills necessary for further study requiring the exercise of some personal responsibility.
