Module Learning Strategies
The module will be taught in twelve lectures and eleven workshops. As the module contains important theoretical and factual information the students will need extra time for reading and thinking. The module tutors will practice the open-door policy between the lectures so that students could sign up for individual tutorials and consultations to discuss issues related to the course. They will also get advice on preparation for student-led workshops.
Module Indicative Content
The module introduces students to different aspects of the object of study, the media, focusing on such important issues as a media environment and institutions, the content of the media, including representation of race and gender, and analyses the processes of production and consumption of media products.
Module Additional Assessment Details
The course will be assessed by one 1,500 word essay and a student-led presentation.
The first learning outcome will be assessed by an essay since the essay will examine a particular media product or practice to demonstrate the student's understanding of the media's role and function in a wider social and political context.
Learning outcomes 2, 3 and 4 will be assessed during student-led seminars.
