Module Indicative Content
In this module we will engage with key debates that have informed Film Studies. A range of theories and issues such as gender and sexualities, race, genre, authorship, semiotics and reception, will be applied to mainstream and independent cinema.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Assessment 1
A 10-minute-long individual presentation to one or two tutors.
Assessment weighting: 50%
The student will research existing academic discussion appertaining to one theoretical concept in Film Studies. The student will consequently give a verbal presentation, to one or two tutors, of her/his understanding of one key theme of the academic debates regarding that chosen theoretical concept. Cite one film to aid your presentation. Learning outcome 2

Essay - 1500 words
Assessment weighting: 50%
Choose one theoretical issue in Film Studies. Research the academic debates generated by it. Discuss your understanding of two or three themes of those debates, before formulating your own position. (Note: your chosen essay theory must be different from your chosen presentation theory.)
Cite one film to aid your essay discussion. Learning outcomes 1, 2, and 3
