Module Indicative Content
This module allows you to combine sound research with practice. You are encouraged to apply your reading and ideas into practice. The research will help you to identify and evaluate what makes an interesting soundtrack (radio, film or tv) and 'fieldwork' such as on-location recordings will lead to editing and compiling a sound archive.

The production of soundtracks for film, television and radio: documentary and drama
Direct sound (actuality and ethnographic recordings)
Foley Artistry
Composed music and pre-recorded music for documentary and drama
Voice and dialogue in film, radio and television
Terms and concepts of recorded sound

Module Learning Strategies
1 Hour introductory lecture, 6 weekly tutorials (10 mins), followed by 3 two-hour workshops. A combination of practical and analytical exercises.
On-location audio recordings at three different times of the day (edited to three minutes each); (1) all recorded sounds logged, prioritised and their functions analysed
Identify an existing sequence on film, television or radio drama. Compare and contrast sounds
Precis and presentation of articles on actuality sounds and sound design
Compilation of sound library: identified sounds for archive material and examples given for potential use (a) documentary (b) fictional
Written treatment for a specific programme with full explanation of usage of sound
Design sound log (i.e. detailed analytical breakdown) for an intended five minute dramatic sequence
