Indicative Content
This module develops your understanding of the development of visual effects techniques, the history and context of VFX and principles of study, research and reflection. The module will encourage you to investigate traditional development pathways and disruptive uses of technology in a research ‘sandbox’. You will develop your ability to communicate your understanding of these elements through written work, practical testing and peer and expert discussion. The module encourages a deep analysis of contextual implications through close research, academic reading, expert analysis and referencing in order to examine different concepts. The module also considers alternative readings of the subject by encouraging respect for and engagement with the views of different practitioners and critics. As a result, the module is designed to enhance your understanding of visual effects and your ability to communicate about it.
Additional Assessment Details
1. Research portfolio assessing learning outcomes 1,2 and 4. The research portfolio should present and analyse a range of authoritative sources focussing on a specific VFX technique. The research should define a test process and evaluate the quality of the research and application to the test project.
2. Test Project assessing learning outcome 3. The test project should be negotiated and designed based on the research portfolio. It should demonstrate a clear process of application of knowledge and understanding to reinforce or challenge the research.
Learning Strategies
The module’s learning is based on a combination of mixed mode teaching sessions to introduce and explore different key topics and concepts around visual effects and research concepts. These will provide an opportunity for greater interaction and discussion by building on a range of activities. You will have opportunities in workshops, group and individual tutorials for brainstorming and peer-discussion. Guided Independent Study may include guided viewing, practical tasks and wider reading in preparation for taught sessions.
