Module Details
Module Indicative Content
Using thematic and regional examples at a variety of scales, this module examines the emergence, character and dynamics of British landscapes. Taking an historical perspective, and with reference to both physical and cultural influences, it considers the external and internal factors that help to explain contemporary environments, geographies and development issues. On the basis of lecture and workshop examples, students are encouraged to develop their own regional and thematic case studies of landscape development and change. The complexity of British landscapes will provide experience in diverse but integrative nature of geographical study, for application at later levels.
Module Learning Strategies
Lectures: 12 hours (These introduce landscape history, thematic landscapes and regional landscapes)
Workshops/seminars: 12 hours (These allow for more in-depth analysis of particular issues and themes as well as providing an opportunity to develop e-learning and distance learning skills. Activities may also include video workshops, debates, role playing, group work etc.)
Directed independent study: 126 hours Independent learning will focus on developing detailed knowledge of the exemplar landscapes, their principal characteristics and evolution. A major component of the directed independent study involves students selecting a UK region or theme and studying it following guidelines provided by tutors.
