Module Additional Assessment Details
1. An EXAM length 2 HOURS weighted at 50%. (LO 1 & 4)
2. A PORTFOLIO weighted at 50%.(LO 2 & 3)

The exam assesses the material covered in teaching block 1 in relation to environmental resources and risks using essay and short answer format. In addition, one of the questions in the exam is a seen question integrating the fieldwork component with secondary literature.

The portfolio consists of a group presentation and an individual critical review. Both focus on the examination of the challenges for sustainable business practice within an organisational context, and allow the analysis of both primary and secondary information and observation. The first relates to the group-work examining the sustainability challenge for an organisation, whilst the critical review is an individual piece of work which places the work within a wider literature context and outlines potential future practice.

Additional Assessment Details:

Many weekly meetings will be linked to readings and the completion of additional formative tasks that will provide opportunities for students to evaluate their understanding of module materials.
The formative activities are part of the learning process on the module, and
students are encouraged to keep these as a formative portfolio, separate from the summative portfolio, based on the second teaching block work. A formative class test will also provide an opportunity for engagement with the style and types of questions encountered in the examination.
Module Indicative Content
The module examines the nature of environmental resources and risks, especially those associated with pollution in the latter case. It analyses the challenges (scientific, environmental, social, political, ethical) for effective environmental management at two scales: the societal scale and the organisational scale.

Part 1 introduces the notion of environmental resources and their creation as a result of human use of natural earth systems. The factors shaping resource availability, use and degradation are examined. The nature of pollution and those factors shaping its pathways and environmental impact are subsequently examined. Case studies will be drawn from a variety of environments and spatial scales.

Part 2 examines the factors that contribute to sustainable business practice and requires the student to identify how these can be incorporated into the management of an organisation. It will also consider how the economic, environmental and social impacts of an organisation's activities can be monitored and measured, together with an outline of some of the practical ways in which an organisation can reduce these impacts, both operationally and strategically.
Module Learning Strategies
Specify the number of contact hours attributed to each type of activity (eg lecture / lab / workshop). Total hours should equate to Contact Hours identified on page 1 of this form.
The module will be delivered through a combination of:
(a) 10 weekly x2 hour classes (20 hours) that will combine, on a flexible basis, lectures with workshop
exercises in the first teaching block and 6 X2 hours classes (12 hours) to reflect the changing emphasis on student-centred group-work in the second teaching block
(b) independent learning in teaching block 1 (60 hours) through guided reading from core texts and the use of web-based materials to develop an advanced knowledge of selected contemporary resource issues.
(c) Examination preparation for teaching block 1. Semester (70 hours)
(d) Project work for teaching block 2 & Assessment Preparation for teaching block 2 (88hours) for undertaking the project and subsequent planning, researching / drafting / writing /editing / producing report and presentation
(e) independent learning in teaching block 2 (50 hours) through guided reading from core texts and the use of web-based materials to develop an advanced knowledge of sustainable business practice
