ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT DETAILS
2 x REPORTS length 750 WORDS weighted at 50% each.

1 x 750 word reflective report upon personal progress in the development of mountain leadership skills to be submitted in week 10 of teaching block two (50%) [Learning outcomes 1, 3, 4]

1 x 750 word report on the development of Level 4 students during teaching block two. (50%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3] – Final assessment
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module provides a framework for students to consolidate their Mountain Leader training and prepare for their assessment.

This module contains 3 main elements:

1. A training course operated by a Mountain Training registered provider. The main areas covered by the course are indicated below. For full details of the content please refer to the Mountain Training, Mountain Leader Award Scheme Prospectus and Syllabus,
a. Group management and the responsibilities of the group leader,
b. Navigation,
c. Access and the environment,
d. Hazards and emergency procedures,
e. Equipment,
f. Expedition skills,
g. Weather,
h. Structure of the activity.
2. Development of vocational, practical, managerial and leadership skills required by a Mountain Leader. Acquired through planning and undertaking quality mountain days and multi-day expeditions for peers and volunteering and/or paid employment planning and undertaking mountain days / multi-day expeditions for an appropriate business or organisation.
3. Continual assessment of your personal Mountain Training logbook and critical appraisal of your personal experience and skills development.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teaching Block 1:

Contact:
At the beginning of the year you will have workshops to go through the module handbook and explain how the module is organised and assessed. Workshops will also be organised to discuss the preparation and planning of quality mountain days. (6 hours)

You will attend a residential Mountain Training Mountain Leader training course, provided by an external Mountain Training accredited training provider, consisting of a total of 6 full days with associated personal study and tutorial work in the evenings. This will include a number of pieces of coursework and self-assessment exercises. This will normally take place in the summer at the end of your first academic year. (48 hours)

Independent study:
Develop practical, managerial and leadership skills required by the Mountain Leader. To this end you will engage in a number of specific occasions leading Level 4 groups (20 hours)

You will critically assess your development of experience and skills and produce a short report and provide structured feedback to Level 4 students. (8 hours)


Teaching Block 2:
Contact:
3 x 2 Hour workshops – Required to manage progress towards assessment and fulfilling the required number and range of quality mountain days.

Independent Study:
For the remaining 62 hours you will engage in independent learning and participating in volunteering and/or paid employment leading mountain day expeditions for appropriate businesses or organisations. This will include completing your log book and also completing your coursework assignments.

SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
You must have an up to date log book that meets the requirements for Mountain Training accredited training course.(Assessed by the accredited training provider)
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Apply the content of the Mountain Training, Mountain Leader Award Syllabus and demonstrate the associated skills and experience.

2) Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the skills development of the Mountain Training, Mountain Leader Award syllabus, together with an ability to present structured critique for Level 4 students through peer mentoring.

3) Consolidate training and develop sufficient experience to attend a Mountain Training assessment course.

4) Plan and undertake quality mountain days and multiday expeditions in the mountainous regions of the UK. Including, risk assessment, route planning, navigation, and the selection of appropriate wild-camping locations.
