The Mountain Training Accredited Mountain Leader Assessment must be passed in order to pass the module.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module contains three main elements.

1. An assessment course operated by a Mountain Training registered provider. For full details of the content please refer to the Mountain Training, Mountain Leader Award Scheme Prospectus and Syllabus. On assessment you will need to demonstrate a detailed knowledge and a practical competence in the following areas of the syllabus: group management and the responsibilities of the group leader, navigation, access and the environment, hazards and emergency procedures, equipment, expedition skills, weather and, the operational framework and legislative control of outdoor activities in the UK.

2. Preparation and submission of a written assignment on aspects of the syllabus.

3. Undertake a field assessment of level 4 students and prepare and submit a written evaluation of level 4 Geography with Mountain Leadership students, assessing their skills against published Mountain Leader Award criteria.

Please note:
In order to graduate with BSc Geography with Mountain Leadership as a degree title you must pass the Mountain Training accredited Mountain Leader Assessment element of this module, undertaken with an accredited provider.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teaching Block 1:

You will attend a residential assessment course, provided by a Mountain Training accredited centre that will normally consist of a total of 6 full days (48 hours) with associated personal study and tutorial work in the evenings. Following your assessment course you will research and prepare a written assignment on specific aspects of the syllabus. Examples of topics that may be covered include: moral and legal responsibilities of the leader, current access legislation, rights of way and access agreements, environmental impact of activities and hazards and risk assessment. You will be involved in the evaluation of level 4 students.

You will have a series of workshops to explain the organisation of the module and the nature of the assessment (6 hours).

Teaching Block 2:

2 x 2hr Workshops

Independent learning:

1 x 6hr Peer assessment exercise

1x2hr Student led workshop for Level 5 Students detailing your experience of the Mountain Leadership Assessment.

The remaining 92 hours of independent learning will be used to research your plan and produce your coursework.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1) Demonstrate a practical competence in all aspects of the Mountain Training, Mountain Leader Award syllabus at a Mountain Training approved Mountain Leader Assessment course.

2) Research, understand and critically evaluate the legal and environmental framework for outdoor activities in the UK, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a leader of groups in mountains and/or remote areas.

3) Evaluate and assess competence in Outdoor Skills (GEOG40444) and communicate that evaluation clearly and concisely to your peers.
