Module Indicative Content
This module will include a discussion of the term "pollution" and the ways in which organisations can contribute to global pollution, coupled with the legislative and regulatory framework in which this can take place. It will also cover the mechanisms by which the EU and the UK environmental directives/laws/regulations are developed, and offer an overview of UK national legislation covering the environment - including a study of the organisations that are responsible for regulating discharges and emissions. It will give you an understanding of the basis of a typical regulatory process, together with compliance requirements and the consequences/penalties for failure, and an appreciation of the influence of laws and regulators' activities on companies' environmental policies, management systems (including ISO 14001 and EMAS) and operations. The module will go on to provide an understanding of basic environmental and sustainable business practices, as well as an explanation of how to go about the process of formulating the environmental policy, objectives and targets for an organisation. It will cover the principles of environmental management, and will offer an opportunity for you to gain an appreciation of the wider impact of environmental policy and regulation in corporate environmental planning. It will help you to understand the reasoning for engaging in a corporate environmental continual improvement process and explain the value of communication with internal and external stakeholders. Finally, it will provide you with detailed knowledge of environmental management quality standards such as ISO 14001 and EMAS, and an understanding of how environmental management systems are applied, audited and reported upon.
Module Learning Strategies
Apart from the text referred to below, all of the learning material and the resources are housed within our virtual learning environment Blackboard. There is a compulsory introductory workshop at the University before the module starts. Here, you will be introduced to the module content and, over subsequent weeks, you will work thorough course material. This provides a structure within which you will read key texts and papers, and also carry out specific tasks such as reflection, summarizing, discussing and reviewing. This work will be undertaken on an individual basis but at various points you will be expected to interact and share material with other students in your learning group
