Module Learning Strategies
8 hours workshop
142 hours independent study
You will attend a workshop at which you will be introduced to the module content and learning resources and receive instruction in use of the Blackboard learning environment and other web-based resources. The workshop will also introduce module themes through the use of video and textual resources. Over subsequent weeks you will then work through self-instructional course material providing a structure for reading key texts and papers and specifying tasks to be completed. This work will be undertaken on an individual basis, but at various points you will be expected to interact and share material with other students in a designated learning group.

The module will be delivered at workshops and over the internet for study at a distance.
Module Indicative Content
This module provides an introduction to the role of NGOs in civil society and their contribution to the sustainable development debate as it has developed over the past two decades. It examines the nature and functions of the work of NGOs in support of environmental and sustainable development initiatives from grass-roots to international level. In parallel it provides an overview of the emergence of sustainable development from concept to practice on the international political agenda, critically examining the progress from the 1992 Rio Conference to WSSD in Johannesburg. Particular attention is given to how the development of the sustainable development agenda represents major challenges for the work of NGOs: issues of accountability, governance, participation and partnerships (with business, government, and other actors in civil society) are evaluated. The module also develops key learning skills such as accessing and utilising web-based learning resources and methods of electronic interaction.
