Module Indicative Content
This module concentrates on practical exploration of composition, communicating through pictures, visual metaphors, and cultural aspects of image making. Traditional and new media are supplemented with 3D and making in the pursuit of understanding visual perception and aesthetic appreciation.
The importance of effective mark-making is emphasised and encouraged through traditional drawing skills in a controlled studio environment using both still life and life drawing. Practical projects and exercises address specific aspects of the image making experience. Diverse mark making methods and techniques are explored, and students are encouraged to adopt an experimental and investigative approach to the use of media.
Throughout this module you are actively encouraged to convey ideas and record observations through the keeping and using of sketch/notebooks: the function and use of personal visual and written recorded material. This module requires studied application of both conventional and unconventional media and visual problem solving, which promotes invention and media exploration.
Module Learning Strategies
A range of studio based exercises and project work will provide the framework through which learning will take place; it will integrate the practical with the theoretical aspects of image making techniques.
Studio work will be supported by introductory lectures and seminars; work in progress will be monitored through group tutorials and critiques.
Life drawing classes will take place in a controlled environment.
Group instruction in mixed media and print production.
Module Additional Assessment Details
At the end of this module you will submit a body of work as outlined in the module handbook.
This will include a research file containing appropriate annotated research into a diverse range of image making techniques as well as practicing artists and designers (Learning Outcome: 1).
Sketchbooks; containing evidence of experimentation with a variety of media and image making techniques. Using sketchbooks and layout pads you will develop a range of possible solutions through rough visuals demonstrating the ability to solve visual communication design problems (Learning Outcomes: 2,4).
Initial ideas will be developed to produce finished illustrations using appropriate media (Learning Outcome: 3).
