Module Indicative Content
This module uses a case study of one particular period to enable students to explore the place of history in contemporary consumer culture both analytically and through making their own cultural artefact.
This module will focus upon an exploration of how early twentieth century Britain, and in particular the Edwardians, have been constructed for popular consumption by looking at websites, advertising, film, television, museums, coffee-table books and popular novels.
Debates about heritage, leisure, consumerism and post-modernism will be introduced alongside discussion of the potential democratisation of knowledge offered by the internet.
Students will both analyse a range of texts and also undertake individually, or in pairs, to research, plan and produce: an advertising or marketing campaign, sample pages and outline for website, a pitch, narrative synopsis and sample dialogue for a fictional film or TV programme focussed on the Edwardian era.
