Module Indicative Content
The module examines a period of fundamental importance for understanding the development of modern European society, with the combined impact of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The module considers themes such as the nature of 'ancien regime' society; impact of the Enlightenment; causes and significance of the French Revolution; changes arising from Napoleon's attempted 'integration' of Europe; Congress of Vienna and the extent of the Restoration; Liberalism and Romanticism as cultural and political movements; the socio-economic causes and political features of the 1848 revolutions.
Module Learning Strategies
The lectures will introduce the main themes and arguments of the module content including video extracts and slides. The seminars will provide for follow-up discussion of the themes from the lectures and some analysis of primary source extracts and video extracts and guidance on research. The independent study element should be used for background reading, reading for the seminars, and preparation of the written assignments.
