INDICATIVE CONTENT
In this module students examine politics in the UK as it has developed in the modern and contemporary era. The key institutions, roles, processes and issues are studied, as are the people who comprise the populace. The constitutional peculiarities and consequences of the constitution are discussed, as are the divisions which manifest themselves in the political parties and interest groups. The way in which politicians are elected and selected are covered, as are the roles and responsibilities of key figures such as the prime minister. The performance of politics in the UK by politicians, parties and other actors are assessed.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The module incorporates three inter-dependent learning strategies. The lecture programme introduces the concepts and themes of the study of politics. The seminars provide for follow up discussion and clarification of the themes and an application of the approaches. Independent learning will be focused on directed reading and note-taking in preparation for lectures and an essay.
