Module Learning Strategies
The module incorporate three different inter-dependent learning strategies: lectures provide the basis of historiographical debates and interpretations, whilst seminar presentations by students provide opportunities for engagement with the literature. Finally individual tutorials will be offered to students wishing to discuss their own particular work/essay plans.

Module Indicative Content
The module considers the development and social, political and economic consequences for Germany from Unification in 1871, through to defeat in WWI and the period of the Weimar Republic and finishing with the rise of National Socialism, World War Two, and the Holocaust.
Key moments, individuals and events in history, key historiographical debates and a variety of interpretations will be examined and considered using historians at the forefront of this period in German history: Kershaw, Mommsen, Bessel, Evans, Broszat, Longerich.

Two 3,500 word essays 50% weighting for each [Learning Outcomes 1-4]
