Module Details
Module Indicative Content
The module is a study in nationalism. Taking the period 1796-1915 it covers the complex political, social, cultural and economic factors that led to the creation of a unified Italy. The role of leaders like Cavour, Garibaldi and Mazzini is examined, showing how they combined but also often opposed each other on how to attain national independence and liberty. The nature of the 'Liberal' state that followed and the pressure for imperialist expansion is also assessed through to the invasion of Libya in 1911, and Italy's entry into the First World War in 1915. Topics include Napoleonic Italy; Restoration States and Governments; The Growth of Liberalism and Radicalism; The Revolutions of 1848; The 'Decade of Preparation' and Unification; Liberal Italy: Progress and Problems c.1861-1876; Challenges to Liberal Italy: Socialism, Imperialism and Futurism c.1876-1915. [Note: a prior knowledge of C19 Italian history is not assumed, and a detailed topic reading list is provided.]

Module Learning Strategies
The lectures will introduce the main themes and arguments of the module content including video extracts and images. The seminars will provide for follow-up discussion of the themes from the lectures and some analysis of primary source extracts and video extracts and guidance on sustained research techniques including at Level 3 article and on-line resource search
es and limited use of inter-library loans if appropriate. The independent study element should be used for background reading, reading for the seminars, and research and preparation of the written assignments with consistent, accurate and fully traceable referencing and bibliography.
