Module Indicative Content
The module analyses the relationship between politics and culture in the major transformations of modern Italy. The uses of culture and propaganda by the Fascist regime; the growth of the Mafia, and the impact of consumer society and individualism on politics and the media are among the themes considered. The module investigates topics such as Gramsci and proletarian culture in Turin; Futurism and the rise of Fascism; The Fascist regime and the 'organisation of consent'; Italy 1943-7 - From the Resistance to the Cold War political order; Catholic and Communist sub-cultures in post-war Italy; 'Cultures of revolt' - student and worker protest and the women's movement, c.1968-78; The Mafia and the 'Southern problem'; The crisis of the First Republic, c.1989-1996; Berlusconi, football and media mogul politics. [Note: a prior knowledge of C20 Italian history is not assumed and a detailed topic reading list is provided.]

Module Learning Strategies
The lectures will introduce the main themes and arguments of the module content including video extracts and images. The seminars will provide for follow-up discussion of the themes from the lectures and some analysis of primary source extracts and video extracts and guidance on sustained research techniques including at Level 3 article and on-line resource searches and limited use of inter-library loans if appropriate. The independent study element should be used for background reading, reading for the seminars, and research and preparation of the written assignments with consistent, accurate and fully traceable referencing and bibliography
