INDICATIVE CONTENT

This module examines the historical development of international politics from the start of the 20th century to date. It considers the key events and processes which have shaped the development of the international system. Particular attention is paid to World War One, World War Two, the Cold War and the post-Cold War ‘New World Order’. This module also scrutinizes the seismic changes and key inflection points of international History directly resulting from these seminal events and process. It explores the central events, actors, institutions and historical trends instrumental in shaping and managing this system. The module is intended to provide you with an overview of the century and an ability to understand the origins of the political, economic and social world of today.

LEARNING STRATEGIES

The main focus will be on self-instruction, within a tightly structured framework and relying largely (but not exclusively) on materials supplied. Week by week students will work through self-instructional course material (delivered via blackboard), which provides the framework and focus for reading key texts and papers and undertaking the specific tasks set. This work will be undertaken on an individual basis, but students will be expected to interact and share material and ideas with other students in their learning group and their tutor (24 hours). The module will run over 12 weeks.
