Reflective Portfolio 40% (2500 words) Learning Outcomes 1-4

Essay 50% (3500 words) Learning Outcomes 1-4

The portfolio and essay will provide the opportunity to demonstrate all four learning outcomes through focused questions that in each case will require knowledge of the practical implications of the subject matter at hand. The portfolio and essay will require you to demonstrate the reading of relevant texts and the use of other appropriate materials to develop an analysis of the relevant issue.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The module will commence with an introduction to the history and geo-population of the Middle East and North Africa. It will continue by exploring the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa and related security issues. The module will do this by focusing on four key themes in the MENA region and tracing them through the period since the Second World War.

The key themes are:
The Arab-Israeli Conflict
US and Soviet/Russian Foreign Policy towards the Region
Energy
Islamist Movements

The time periods are:
The Colonial Period to 1945
1945-55
1956-67
1968-79
1979-88
1989-2002
2003-12
2013 to the current date

This method of study provides the advantage of a chronological approach to the history of the region, while considering the key themes as a whole and not as isolated events. For example, it is impossible to understand the Arab-Israeli conflict without also considering US and Soviet/Russian foreign policy.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
The primary learning strategy consists of interactive tasks via Blackboard and tutorial support (36 hours). 264 hours are to be used in self-directed study assisted by a detailed module handbook, Blackboard material, and relevant textbooks.
