Module Learning Strategies
There will be a combination of student and tutor-centred learning, including case study ''workshops'' and role-playing exercises as well as formal lecturing. Students will give individual presentations (prefereably typed and pre-circulated). There will also be a programme of directed reading. Lectures : 8 hours. 'formal' seminars: 8 hours : Workshops and other learning methods: 6 hours. 278 hours will be for self directed study assisted by the module handbook and to include preparation for the essay and examination.
Module Additional Assessment Details
The essay will require you to apply conceptual and theoretical insight to a problem associated with a substantial aspect of diplomacy, whether historical or contemporary (outcomes 1,2 &3)

The examination will test your overall appreciation of the concerns of the module, and your flexibility in applying your knowledge to specified concerns (outcomes 1,2 & 3)

Both assessments will look for how you integrate concepts and general themes with detailed research appropriate to the topic chosen giving you every opportunity to demonstrate the general learning outcomes.

A pass is awarded only when all of the assessment is complete and the work meets the learning objectives of the module.

A merit performance in the module will be indicated by an exemplary performance in meeting the learning objective in the module.

A distinction performance in the module will be indicated by excellence in meeting the learning objectives of the module.
Module Indicative Content
Overview of policy analysis literature and its central concerns. Policy-making and implementation in differing contexts. Actors in the policy process: power, the state, bureaucracies. Policy implementation on an international and global level. Processes: decision-making and other models, reformism, policy failure. The module will use detailed case-study material including: the EC/EU and the policy-making environment: the World Bank and UNHCR and policy implementation; Allison's view of the Cuban missile crisis; and gender analysis in planning and implementation.
