Module Learning Strategies
This is a serial module running across both semesters which will enforce key points and allow students to develop their knowledge and put into practice developing skills over a longer period.
The module will consist of weekly 2-hour workshops to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, create, develop and refine celebrity-based articles in a modern media environment.
Workshops will normally consist of a short presentation or discussion with tutors followed by practical demonstrations and tasks, allowing tutors and peers to give verbal feedback individually and as a group.
Students will also have a one-to-one tutorial at least once in each semester to analyse their strengths and areas for improvement
Module Indicative Content
This module will guide students through the processes of understanding the celebrity-based nature of modern media, while also giving them an in-depth understanding of the world of showbusiness reporting. It will allow them to think about the implications of celebrity articles, as well as allowing them to gain the skills required to successfully gather, develop and publish pieces of work in a professional environment. It will also look at the different structure of stories for a range of outlets including TV, radio, print, the web and mobile technologies. The module will provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to both produce and analyse stories to professional standards.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A portfolio of articles totalling 5,000 words, which would normally include some in class assessments (weighting 100%), focusing on producing the variety of copy centred around celebrity figures, from fillers to leads, basic profiles to full backgrounders, follow-ups to breaking news.
