INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

Normally CLASS TEST length between 0.27 HOURS and 1 HOUR weighted at 100% [Pass rate 95%]

Requirement to pass the module
60 wpm end of Semester 1
80 wpm end of Semester 2 are required

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS
NCTJ external examinations at speeds ranging from 60 wpm to 120 wpm.
An NCTJ examination at a speed of 100 wpm is the target.

These examinations consist of:
60- 80 wpm:
one passage of 4 minutes duration.
A 30-second interval is given after 2 minutes.
Transcription is required at a speed of 10 wpm.
The pass rate is 97.5%

90 – 120 wpm:
one passage of 4 minutes duration.
A 30-second interval is given after 2 minutes and a
15 second interval is given after the third minute.
Verbatim transcription is required of the first three minutes of dictation
AND a quote must be extracted and transcribed from the fourth and final minute.
The pass rate for the transcription of the first 3 minutes of dictation is 97%.
The quote from the final minute of dictation must be transcribed with
100% accuracy.

The internal test which takes place in April is the final test. Students who hold an NCTJ speed equal to, or in excess of, this speed on the date of the internal assessment, will be exempt from the internal assessment.
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module introduces students to the importance of fast accurate shorthand note taking in various journalistic settings. The Shorthand method used is Teeline, and students are prepared for the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Shorthand examinations.
LEARNING STRATEGIES
Regular weekly workshops with a specialist shorthand teacher combined with independent study using Blackboard and other audio/visual study aids

Shorthand skills will be used during practical journalism classes for note-taking

Regular speed tests and homework will contribute to the learning process

NCTJ past papers and audio will be used for independent study

Marie Cartright (2009) NCTJ Teeline Gold Standard.
This contains:
CD with over 5 hours practice dictation.
Past exam materials from 50-120wpm allowing students to build speed gradually at their own pace.
Authored by Marie Cartwright, Chief Examiner for the NCTJ's shorthand board.
