LEARNING OUTCOMES
Exam:
1. One, two-hour on line examination, to be taken in semester 1. The examination will involve all the learning outcomes [1-4]. Examination questions will be based on recent NCTJ examination papers and answers will comprise short, essay-style responses. 30%

Coursework comprising of a Portfolio and reflective evaluation:
2. A portfolio of images that clearly show a number of situations where you have used legal relevancy to produce images that are publishable under current legal and ethical regulations. To accompany your images you will produce a document detailing which laws and regulations you have considered as well as publishable criteria such as captions and copyright. Alongside the portfolio, you will produce a report detailing your understanding and engagement with Photographic agencies and research on your findings around the sector as a whole. (Learning Outcomes 1-6 ) 70%
INDICATIVE CONTENT
The core aim of the module is to ensure that photojournalism students have knowledge and understanding of the professional Photojournalistic environment in relation to law and ethical requirements. The module will include: The business of working for a Photographic agency; publishing words and images; developing a professional on line presence and legal and ethical issues. You will be introduced to key legal issues most relevant to publishing work within a journalistic context, including; defamation, contempt of court and privacy. You will also examine ethical aspects of journalistic writing embodied in the Editor’s Code of Practice and Ofcom regulations. Other topics such as copyright and confidentiality, use of images, and reporting of children will be discussed. Topical cases in the news will also be included where appropriate to underpin teaching and learning.
