Module Learning Strategies
Taught sessions combining lectures, seminars and workshops. Sessions will be led/delivered by staff and guest lecturers. Seminars will include the viewing and interrogation of law training videos, workshop analysis of case studies, group dissection of practical legal problems and how to overcome them and critical discussion of legal, ethical and regulatory issues as they arise in the news. There will be a programme of directed hand-out reading to support students' independent study.
Module Indicative Content
Examination of legal, ethical and regulatory issues, restrictions and guidelines including:
- Industry codes of practice - BBC Charter, producers' and on-line guidelines; Ofcom, ITC, Radio Authority, Broadcast
Standards Commission and NUJ codes, C.4 compliance manual and the provisions of the Communications Bill.
- The operation of criminal, civil and coroners' courts, tribunals, local authority and company meetings and reporting
rights, contempt of court, defamation and malicious falsehood, police and criminal evidence, rehabilitation of
offenders, sexual offences, children and the law, The Local Government Act.
- Trespass, copyright, plagiarism, breach of confidence, Data Protection Act, injunctions and keeping information
secure, freedom of information.
- Diversity, equal opportunities, human rights legislation and the Representation of the People Act , Race Relations Act,
Anti-Terrorism Act.
