Module Learning Strategies
There are 24 weeks of normal lectures, 44 hours of workshops and two reading weeks. In IT, lecturers provide training on a range of uses of IT and your competence will be assess in terms of using IT. In Study Skills and Legal Skills, Lecturers will include interactive leaning activities such as group discussion, practical demonstrations and tests, oral presentations, video etc, web based activities and written formative and summative assessment.
Module Indicative Content
INDICATIVE CONTENT
This module will run in both semester one and two and will be divided into Information Technology and Skills.
During the IT section of the course you will be introduced to the legal databases, law reports and journals. You will be equipped with the confidence to use these in your studies
In the Study Skills section of this module you will be introduced to all of the skills which will enable you to be an effective student in a Higher Education Environment. These include learning Time Management Skills, Secondary Research Techniques (such as Locating secondary Sources, Note-taking and Academic Reading). You will also learn Essay Writing Techniques, Presentation Skills, Revision Skills and the Skills required to work in a group. Throughout this part of the module, there will be an emphasis on your personal development in terms of Career Planning, Preparation for University and Self-Evaluation as well as CV writing.
Module Additional Assessment Details
Ability to meet the Learning Outcomes will be demonstrated through a portfolio of evidence which is gathered over the course of the Foundation Year. This will include;
Semester 1 Assessment weighting 25%
- 1 Study Skills task - Referencing (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, & 5 - Evidence from other modules may be included in support.)
Semester 2 Assessment weighting 75%
- 1 IT task (Learning Outcomes 1 &4)
- 1 Study Skills task (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, & 5 - Evidence from other modules may be included in support.)
- 1 Legal Skills task (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, & 5)
To pass this module students must achieve an overall mark of at least 40%. Students must achieve at least 25% in all assessed elements of this module.
