Module Learning Strategies
Whole Group sessions: a weekly lecture, (1.5hours * 24 weeks) introducing and defining basic ideas and concepts in regard to the module content. Lectures supported by appropriate visual aids and associated handout reading and study plans. This will include small groups and 1-1 tutorials these sessions are also built upon independent learning: it is here where you will be offered support in regard to your development tailored to the formative assessment within the varying modules. (36 hours)

Directed Study/Independent Learning: You will work with the prescribed course text throughout the teaching block. Some of this preparation will be organised by the use of internet sources. Additionally you will be provided with feedback from tutorials to assist your work. (264 Hours)

Throughout this module there will be guest speakers who will be able to link the theoretical element of Criminal Law to the practical nature. By considering real events you will be able to appreciate the rigorous nature of Criminal Law and the role the Police play in upholding it.
Ex-service personnel will be involved in some areas of delivery to give examples of Criminal Law in practice and opportunities to visit the Courts to see Criminal Law in practice will be offered to you.

Module Indicative Content
This module deals with the main element of Criminal liability, within the Uniformed Services, specifically the Police, criminal law will play a large part in your potential role. Throughout the duration of this module you will cover varying areas of Criminal Law. Following this input you will be able to correctly apply the law to set scenarios illustrating your ability to understand legal fact in the context of current society.

Elements you will be discussing include:
- Underlying theories and principles
- General elements of criminal liability
- General defences
- Modes of participation in crime
- Inchoate offences
- Homicide and non-fatal offences against the person
- Theft, fraud and related property offences
- ECHR and the Human Rights Act 1998

All of these impact on the various public services and it is important to appreciate how they are considered by the courts and how they are dealt with by the Justice System.
Module Additional Assessment Details
ASSESSMENT A
1 hour multiple choice test at the end of Learning Outcome 1 weighted at 50%. This test will assess learning outcome 1 and consider factors such as criminal law itself and the development of it in contemporary context

ASSESSMENT B
1 hour unseen examination at the end of Learning Outcome 3 weighted at 50%. The examination will assess learning outcomes 2 and 3.

To pass this module you must achieve a grade of at least 40% in each of the assessed tasks.

Formative
Students will receive formative feedback from peers and tutors during class-based tasks and discussions. They will also receive formative feedback regarding the assignment during personal tutorials
