Module Learning Strategies
Whole Group sessions: a weekly lecture, (1.5 hours * 12 weeks) introducing and defining basic ideas and concepts in regard to the module content. Lectures supported by appropriate visual aids and associated handout reading and study plans. This will include small groups and 1-1 tutorials these sessions are also built upon independent learning: it is here where you will be offered support in regard to your development tailored to the formative assessment within the varying modules. (18 hours)
Directed Study/Independent Learning: You will work with the prescribed course text throughout the teaching block. Some of this preparation will be organised by the support of internet sources. You will be provided with feedback from tutorials to assist your work. (132 Hours)
Throughout the course you will take part in various placements and work place tasks. From these you are required to fill in a reflective log specifically concentrating on teamwork and the management of it within the services. From this information you will be able to reflect on the methods used within the services and comment on the effectiveness of these roles. You will also be able to draw on information from role-plays and tasks within the class to consider your own managerial ability and the impact that it may have on the team around you.

Module Indicative Content
It is important to understand that you will need to appreciate teams and leadership in order to become efficient in your chosen career and the role that you perform. This module is intended to develop your knowledge and understanding of how to manage both individuals and teams in order to maximise their potential within the public services.
This may include:
- Reasons for developing both individuals and teams
- Characteristics of groups and teams, team membership and leadership
- Tuckman's Theory of group formation
- How to identify team roles (eg Belbin) and the uses and implications for managers
- Teams in different contexts, e.g. management and operational
- The use of techniques to evaluate team performance
- Reasons for developing people and teams
- How to identify development needs
- How people develop and learn
- Causes of conflict and interpersonal friction (including bullying and harassment) and resolving them.
- Stages in development of conflict
- Effects of conflict on individual and team performance
- Techniques/approaches for the minimisation/ resolution of conflict
A consideration of the above elements will allow you to understand the importance of your role and will ensure you are able to progress throughout your work placements with maximum efficiency and know the importance of the observation and interactive element.
Module Additional Assessment Details
ASSESSMENT A
A presentation (maximum 20 minutes) at the end of Learning Outcome 2 will assess Learning Outcome 1&2 and be weighted at 70%.
You will prepare a presentation (e.g PowerPoint) which will require you to consider the varying aspects and importance of teamwork and leadership. The presentation should analyse the potential impact of differing theories and theorists and the impact that they have had on the developing role of the public services specifically relating to the duration of teams.
You will also be required to discuss conflict and the strategies that can be used to address it; this will require you to consider the problems you are faced with allowing for a constructive suggestion of how to tackle the issue.
This assignment will require you to reflect upon the management styles observed within your public service placements, you will have the opportunity to comment on them and their effectiveness, to gain the higher grades you will offer suggestions on how they could be developed to make the team more effective in the role they perform.
Students will submit supporting materials that evidence their research for and preparation of the presentation. This element should be fully referenced in the Oscola style.
ASSESSMENT B
A group role play (maximum 20 minutes) at the end of the module will assess Learning Outcome 3 and be weighted at 30%.
You will be required to take part in a group role play that illustrates your understanding of how conflict in the workplace can arise, you will be required to talk through your role play and then successfully offer clear strategies of how to address it.
To pass this module you must achieve a grade of at least 40% in each of the assessed tasks.
Alongside this you are required to submit a written piece justifying how your roleplay has matched the requirements of the assessment.
Formative
You will receive formative feedback from peers and tutors during class-based tasks and discussions. Additional formative feedback will also be given regarding the assignment during personal tutorials.
It is from this feedback that you will be able to gather evidence to support your assignments.
