Module Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered via introductory lecture sessions with accompanying study plans and workshop sessions. The man substantive content of the module will be accessible via Blackboard as a distance learning environment.
Contact Hours
Face-to-face sessions will be used to explore particular aspects of EC law in more detail and provide a clear introduction to the use of Blackboard. These sessions willcomprise larger-group lectures and small-group workshops (15 hours).
In addition, students will carry our research and self-study tasks in order to participate in scheduled online discussion sessions with the tutor and other students (20 hours).
Independent Study
Students will be expected to spend a considerable amount of time on independent study, utilising the Blackboard content and completing independent reading. Each topic area will include self-study tasks to complete. These will be followed up by the use of reflective assessment forms and help students to assess their process by identifying strengths and weaknesses and also online discussion groups to explore the topic areas in more depth (268 hours).
Development of Skills
Students will develop the skills of critical analysis and commentary upon research and current developments in addition to preparation and participation which will develop problem-solving skills by encouraging students to apply their knowledge of the law to give an accuate statement of the legal position in hypothetical situations. The online study plans will also aim to develop students' research skills by reqjuiring them to locate specific documents and students are given IT research exercises to help them to develop the skills necessary to seek out further information for themselves.

Module Indicative Content
The aim of this module is provide students with a critical understanding of the institutional framework of the European Community within the European Union and to enable them to develop problem-solving skills in relation to some of the main substantive areas of European Community Law. In particular, the course will focus on the following areas:
- the relationship bwtween Community Law and national law
- the lawmaking process within the Community
- the role of the European Court of Justice
- free movement of goods
- free movement of persons
- Community competition law
Module Additional Assessment Details
1 x 2000 word assignment - 50% of overall mark.
The assignment will assess learning outcomes 1-3. The assignment assesses the first three aspects of the indicative content via an essay-type question.
1 x 2 hour examination - 50%
The examination will assess learning outcomes 1-5. The examination comprises problems relating to the latter three aspects of the indicative content. Knowledge of the first three aspects will be crucial to the understanding and application of teh substantive content of the module. The examination comprises problem questions.
To pass the module, students must obtain a mark of at least 40% in each component. (The Examination Board may, in its discretion, allow a student to pass the module where that student has achieved an average mark of at least 40% and a mark of at least 35% in each component. Students are advised to consult the Award Regulations on this issue).
