Module Indicative Content
This module is research based and so the content is tailored to this. There is an overview of the following areas with an emphasis of the dynamics of employment law:

Equal Opportunities: Discrimination on the following grounds: sex, race, disability, religion and belief, sexual orientation. Impact of age discrimination and possible extension of the law to cover discrimination against carers. Emphasis on the broad themes of the law rather than details e.g. consider the effect of the present definition of disability and issues such as positive discrimination.

Termination of employment: Ways in which employment can be terminated. Wrongful dismissal and unfair dismissal. Effect of the new disputes procedures. Remedies.
Module Learning Strategies
This is largely self managed but students attend three sessions each of three hours as follows:

Session One: Introduction to employment law and research methodology and materials.
Session Two: Equal Opportunities
Session Three: Termination of employment

Sessions two and three are seminars and students are expected to come prepared to discuss a particular topic (e.g. the effect of the new dispute procedures on the law of unfair dismissal). This discussion will then lead on to the assignment topic that will be introduced in session two and considered again in session three.

The first two sessions take place in June after the end of the first year assessments and the third session takes place in September before the main year programme begins. Students this have an opportunity during the summer break to reflect in their material land make a start on their assignment.
