Module Study Guide
Computing facilities will be needed to access materials available on the web and specialist on-line databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, BAILII and the Law Commission site.

Part-time CPE students are able to work independently and the teaching programme reflects this.

Whole Group Sessions
Lectures are designed to disseminate information and to provide an overview of the topics in order to direct the student's own study and highlight any areas of difficulty. 3 hours per week, for 2 x 4 week blocks = 24 hours.

Small Group Sessions
Small group sessions include both problems and essay style questions. Tutorial work sheets are printed in the Study Guide and distributed at the beginning of the academic year. 1 hour per week for 2 x 4 week blocks = 8 hours.

Independent Study
* Post-lecture reading - students are encouraged to read around topics in greater detail after lectures and make their own study and case notes. The post-lecture reading is directed by the tutorial preparation.

* Preparation for tutorials forms an important part of the teaching programme for Land Law. Students are encouraged to make detailed written notes before each tutorial.

The Development of Skills
* Research Skills
The development of research skills in the context of Land Law is encouraged by demonstrations on the use of IT resources such as Lexis, Westlaw, BAILII and the Law Commission site. Research topics are included in the tutorial programme to encourage students to practice research skills in their own time and to have the opportunity at tutorials to discuss their progress in this type of research.

* Problem Solving Skills
a) Short lecture demonstrations are given during Land Law lectures to provide guidance on how to solve problem questions

b) Problem solving skills are developed by provision of study plans for selected tutorial questions. The study plans consist of a series of questions to help enable students to analyse and apply the law to a given problem. The study plan is then used as the basis of the discussion during the relevant part of the tutorial.

* Knowledge, intellectual skills and communication skills are developed by the students preparation for and participation in tutorials.

Although contact time is lower than for day-time attendance, the additional emphasis on directed and self-managed study, helped by on-line and other learning resources and support from module teams, and opportunities to make use of the library and IT systems while on-site and when working from home or other locations, ensures that students have a comparable learning experience and support to day-time attenders.

Total independent and directed study = 168 hours
Total learning time = 200 hours

This module seeks to provide students with a broad introduction to the fundamental principles of Land law including the concept of proprietary interests and the concept of competing priorities. The syllabus is comprised of the following topics:

Trusts of land
Co-ownership
Leases
Licences
Adverse possession
Easements and Profits a prendre
Freehold covenants
Mortgages
