Module Learning Strategies
Core theoretical material will be delivered through a mixture of 36 hours of lectures (usually 3 a week). A further 36 hours of tutorials (usually 3 a week), 12 hours of practical labs (usually 1 a week) and 12 hours of computer laboratory sessions (usually 1 a week), will give opportunities to apply techniques to a variety of technology applications.
Initially, the basic mathematics will be taught, and this will then be dovetailed with and used in the applications to mechanics and fluids.
Module Additional Assessment Details
A coursework weighted at 100% incorporating:-
A portfolio of work including Excel based assignment(s), multiple choice and written phase tests assessing learning outcomes 1-5.
Module Indicative Content
Mathematics needed to support the work on Dynamics and Mechanics
Numeracy: arithmetic operations, percentages, powers, roots, ratios (with, for example, applications to gears)
Data analysis: averages, measures of spread, estimation, rounding errors and accuracy.
Algebra: Laws of indices, logarithms, factorisation, solution of equations, transformation of formulae.
Trigonometry: graphs, general solution of simple trigonometric equations. Solution of triangles, including cosine and sine rules.
Calculus: differentiation of simple functions, application to simple dynamics (including velocity, acceleration and extrema problems). Definite and indefinite integrals with application to areas.
Dynamics and Mechanics
Practical experimentation backed up by theory and mathematical understanding in the following areas:
Motion along a straight line; Newton¿s laws of motion; Vectors; Projectiles.
Equilibrium of a particle; Friction; Moments of forces; Centre of mass.
Energy, work and power; Circular motion; Use of vectors.
Dimensional analysis.
