Module Additional Assessment Details
1. An in-course assessment weighted at 50%.
2. A 2 hour exam weighted at 50%.
1. The in-course assessment will be a portfolio comprising of one class test (length 1 hour) to assess the basic techniques and an assignment using a mathematical package to implement the techniques. This will cover learning outcomes 1 and 3.
2. A final exam (2 hours) to assess the application of the techniques to problems and the interpretation of the solutions. This will cover learning outcome 2.
Module Indicative Content
Applications of a mathematical software package such as MAPLE (introduction and the use in all of the other topics).
Eigenvalue analysis with applications: simplifying linear systems, solving systems of differential equations.
Fourier analysis including the use of Fourier series to obtain a frequency analysis of periodic functions and Fourier transforms for transient functions. An elementary introduction to generalised functions.
Module Special Admissions Requirements
Students must be registered on the Maths and Applied Statistics Degree.
Module Learning Strategies
The material will be introduced through lectures (24 hours), examples classes, tutorials and practicals in groups of no more than 20 students, (12 hours) together with supplementary MAPLE material to be access via the web.
Typically contact will compromise 2 hours lecture and 1 hour tutorial/practical per week.
