Prior study of MATH50300 Mathematical Modelling and Operational Research or equivalent.

Module Learning Strategies
The material will be introduced via 12 hours of lectures covering simulation theory (1 a week) and 18 hours of practical making use of simulation software (alternating 1 and 2 hours per week).
Module Additional Assessment Details
Portfolio weighted at 100% assessing learning outcomes 1-3 comprising:-

1 hour test weighted at 30%
A 2000 word individual report weighted at 70% detailing the objectives, modelling and results from a simulation study of a real world problem.
Module Indicative Content
The meaning and methodology of simulation modelling.

Modelling of discrete event simulation - model building, verification, validation, experimentation.

Queuing theory.

Statistical considerations - random numbers, sampling methods, sampling methods, statistical analysis of results, variation reduction techniques.

Computer simulation tools.
